At Redeemer, we're involved in outreach at the local and global level.
Canadian Lutheran World Relief
Each year as our congregational Advent or Lenten project, we prepare yellow We Care kits for Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR).
CLWR works with Lutherans from all over the world, through the Lutheran World Federation.
These kits are sent overseas for use by people displaced by political unrest or natural disaster. For these men, women and children, these kits are a lifeline and may be all that they possess. Truly, each kit is a real blessing in one person's life.
CLWR's most recent We Care shipment went to Jordan to supply a refugee camp for Syrians fleeing civil war.
In fall 2013 we also participated in an incredible Lutheran cross-Canada sweater round-up to provide warmth for winter in the Jordanian camp. Previous shipments went to Haiti. Our Sunday school kids and congregation will prepare School kits and Personal kits, including clothing for a man, woman, girl or boy (skirts or dresses for women and girls).
Out of the Cold
We help with the Out of the Cold program hosted at All Saints Kingsway Anglican. We supply overnight volunteers once a month and do one big dinner every season. In addition, one of our members has been preparing soup EVERY WEEK during the season for nine years. We’re now spreading the workload, she’s shared her tips for making soup for 100 (it’s not feeding the 5,000, but it’s still feels pretty significant).
The Garden Party
Several years ago, we developed part of our property into a garden to grow vegetables to feed some of Toronto's hungry. Next, we welcomed community members to work with us on this project, and now The Garden Party at Redeemer Lutheran is thriving! Last year, our neighbor St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church offered some of their land to the Garden Party, expanding the plot. This year, the garden provided nearly 700 pounds of vegetables and herbs for St. Francis Table (Queen St. west of Dufferin) and Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre. That’s a lot of kale! In fact, the Garden Party at Redeemer Lutheran provided salads for every guest at St. Francis table through the season, May to October. By working with our neighbours, the Garden has become an incredible blessing in our community.
